“Conal O’Brien’s  What Ever Happened to Anna Canneli ?

is a big, sprawling, high-concept thriller that mixes political conspiracy, personal betrayal, and long-buried military secrets into a fast-moving and compelling narrative. It’s a “big chapters, big canvas” kind of novel, and it does not shy away from using the form to deal with pertinent issues concerning truth and its suppression, especially in contexts involving agencies of institutional power.

The ball gets rolling with Major Martin Prons circulating a mysterious document. This “dangerous document” is sent to selected individuals, one of whom is Rosa Abruzzo in Sicily, which is important because it sets in motion the search for Anna Canneli and the information in question.

… Rather than divulging what’s coming next, it’s better to move on to some of the deeper thematic content in the book, because that’s where the real substance lies. The scenes involving the circulation of the redacted and unredacted documents show how information is controlled, fragmented, and selectively revealed, depending on who holds it and what they stand to gain. What emerges is a world in which facts exist but are mediated through institutions that decide what is seen, what is hidden, and ultimately what people choose to believe.”

    from Readers’ Favorite:

What Ever Happened to Anna Canneli? by Conal O’Brien is book three in the series, introducing many familiar characters, but it can be read as a standalone. Private eye Artemis Bookbinder, his son Silas, and their team investigate a high-profile murder and uncover politicians and corruption that reach the highest levels of government. A television news station thrives due to political influence. Add to the mix a jilted lover, missing art treasures (from a real-life case - the Gardner Museum in Boston), independent podcasters, and the scene is set for a high-tension scenario. We are not certain which side many of the characters are on; are they good or bad? There are secrets from crime families in Italy and cover-ups in Washington, D.C. that unravel through the pages of this excellent book, told from many different points of view.

The narrative moves at breakneck speed in scene changes, situations, and people. Yet, Conal O’Brien cleverly takes moments to describe the surroundings, whether it be rural Sicily, Vermont, or New York City – all with crystal clarity. I felt I was there in the moment, an observer as the tale unfolded. It’s a well-constructed narrative, and despite my not having read the first two books, the plot was easy to follow. I liked the storyline, the nail-biting events, and cared for both good and bad characters from the start. What Ever Happened to Anna Canneli? is a satisfying read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

"Who is that?" Mak asked, puzzled.

"That's Anna Canneli." Deni rolled her eyes.

"Uh ... Cannoli?" He looked surprised.

She laughed. "No, Canneli, and there's really no explaining her."
